Total training is expanding its horizons – sort of – by offering training on other professional products. In their latest offering, Total Training tackles Dreamweaver 8.
When I first heard Brian Maffitt announce they were branching out and covering Macromedia projects, I was impressed they were expanding their reach. Of course the next day Adobe announced they were purchasing Macromedia, so in the end Total Training is not straying too far from their origins.
But let's face it Dreamweaver is a much more robust web development application and holds the market. With the number of websites growing everyday, and the increase in the number of people developing professional websites, there is definitely a need for training. In this two DVD collection, Total Training teaches the fundamentals that any beginner needs to know.
While a majority of the training is aimed at the beginner, there are a few sections of note for the intermediate users – namely working with Cascading Style Sheets, Layers, and building a DHTML (Dynamic) website. These show up towards the end of the second disc, and are a great launching point for an advanced course. If you are just starting out, these lessons are the best out there for getting up to speed quickly. With a little under 10 hours of training on these DVDs, you will be able to create a solid professional website in just a few days.
There are a few missing pieces. When dealing with website creation there is no way to develop a complete site without a few other things. During the forms section, host Janine Warner, does say she is only showing how to set up the form, but will not cover sending the results via a CGI script. It would have been nice to include sources for free scripts, or even include a script on the DVD.
Total Training for Dreamweaver 8 includes all the project files used in the training, as well as bonus files you can download from the website once you register your product.
The training is delivered in the Total Training interface that allows you to quickly access specific chapters on a disc, bookmark points of return, and quickly access the Total Training site to purchase other training materials. If you plan on watching this training while working with Dreamweaver you have two choices – get a really large monitor, with half the screen devoted to the DVD and the other half for Dreamweaver, or get two monitors.
I like Total Training for Dreamweaver 8, it covers the basics and is at a price point ($199) that makes it affordable for the next dot-com millionaire. I give Total Training for Dreamweaver 8 a Strong Buy Recommendation.
